Transfer by bus to Imbabura province, to Lake Cuicocha, located in an ancient volcanic crater at an altitude of 3000 m, on the slopes of the Cotacachi volcano (130 km, 3 hours by bus).
Hike around the lake, 4 to 5 hours of walking. Then transfer, and meeting with an Indian community in the Cotacachi region, discovery of their customs and traditions. Night in a hostel with a family from the community.
Day 3: Cubilche (3850m)
This morning, our hosts learned old-fashioned ploughing techniques: with draft animals, the iron plough whose ploughshare sinks to trace furrows in the ground. Are you tempted to try it? Then, road transfer to La Esperanza, then ascent on foot to the summit of Cubilche (3850m), one of the satellite volcanoes of Imbabura. 3 hours to reach the summit, then descent into eucalyptus forests, mountain meadows and patchwork fields. Height difference +/- 600 m, 5 hours of walking. Overnight in a hostel in La Esperanza (3100 m).
Day 4: Imbabura (4600 m)
Ascension of Imbabura (4600 m), a large extinct volcano located 60 km north of Quito. Height difference +/- 1200 m, 7 to 8 hours of walking. Our breath is a bit short due to the altitude, but there are no technical difficulties. From the summit, on a clear day, magnificent view of all the mountains of northern Ecuador. Overnight in Otavalo.
Day 5: Fuya-Fuya (4279 m)
In the morning, transfer to Mojanda Lakes (3700 m), then easy ascent of Fuya-Fuya (4279 m).

Transfer by van to Insilivi, from where our hike to the village of Chugchilan starts. Height difference +750/-450 m, 5 hours of walking. Overnight in a hostel (local inn).
Day 7: Quilotoa Lake (3900m)
Hike through one of the wildest Andean regions in Ecuador, inhabited by small communities of Indian farmers, to reach Lake Quilotoa. The lake, bright turquoise green, occupies the crater of an ancient volcano. Height difference +100/-280 m, 5 hours of walking. Overnight in a hostel.
Day 8: El Chaupi (3350 m)
Hike to Zumbahua Village, passing through Toachi Canyon. 4-5 hours of walking. Transfer by bus to the village of El Chaupi, located at the foot of the Ilinizas, two twin volcanoes, the South Summit, more difficult (5248 m), and the North Summit (5100 m), our objective the next day, which was reached for the first time in 1912, by the Ecuadorian mountaineers Martinez and Villavicencio. Overnight in a hostel.
Day 9: Illiniza Norte (5100 m)
Gradual ascent to the “Virgin” (3800 m), then to the Ilinizas refuge (4600 m). 5 to 6 hours of walking. Depending on the level of the group and the conditions of the volcano and the weather, possibility of continuing the ascent in the direction of Iliniza Norte (5100 m). 2 to 3 hours of walking, on steep terrain but not snowy in normal times. Magnificent panorama of the great Ecuadorian volcanoes covered by glaciers. Long descent, then drive to Lasso. Height difference +/-1200m. Overnight in a hostel.

The first ascent was made in 1872 by the German geologist W. Reiss and the Colombian A.M. Escobar. Height difference +/- 300 m, 2 hours of walking. Overnight at the shelter.
Day 11: Cotopaxi (5897 m)
Wake up at midnight, departure around 1 am for the ascent of Cotopaxi (5897m).

SPOT
Cotopaxi
The highest active volcano in Ecuador
Cotopaxi is an Ecuadorian volcano that borders on the mythical 6000 barrier. With its 5897 meters above sea level, it is the highest active volcano in the country. From Quito, located 60 kilometers from the volcano, the view of Cotopaxi is fascinating. Its almost perfect snowy cone is the image of Epinal that one can imagine of a volcano. Its ascent is relatively easy. The road allows you to go to an altitude of 4500 meters, then the path is marked up to a refuge which is 4800 meters away. Above 5000 meters, progression on the glacier requires specific equipment (crampons and ice ax).

The airline used may involve transit through the United States, in which case you must have:
- A biometric passport valid for 6 months after the date of departure from the United States
Since April 1, 2016, the law requires that all travelers to the United States or in transit on American soil be in possession of a biometric passport (with electronic chip).
A biometric passport, symbolized by a chip on the cover, meets international standards for securing and storing information about the passport holder. All passports issued in France since June 29, 2009 meet this obligation.
- An electronic travel authorization (ESTA):
All travelers going to the United States or in transit at an American airport must be in possession of an electronic travel authorization before boarding for the United States (21 dollars).
To obtain it, only connect to the official “ESTA” website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ and fill out an electronic form no later than 72 hours before departure.
Careful! Many pirate sites offer this service.
Of course, we advise you not to wait until the last moment to do this procedure.
ATTENTION: exclusion from the VWP (Visa Waiver Program = visa exemption program) of certain categories of travelers:
> Travelers who have been to Cuba since January 12, 2021 or who wish to travel there before a stay in the United States cannot benefit from the ESTA regime and must apply for a visa at an American consulate before undertaking a trip to the United States, even if they benefit from a previously approved ESTA, under penalty of having it canceled by border police officers (Customs and Border Protection) when entering American soil, or to be the subject of a decision to deny boarding. For more information (in English), consult the FAQ on the website of the federal agency Customs and Border Protection.
> Travelers who have been to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Libya, Libya, Libya, Libya, Libya, Libya, Somalia, Yemen or Sudan since 1 March 2011 and persons with Iranian, Iraqi, Sudanese or Syrian nationality cannot benefit from the visa exemption regime.

IMPORTANT: POSSIBLE TRANSIT THROUGH THE UNITED STATES:
=> These people must apply for a B1/B2 visa valid, depending on the case, for several years from the American diplomatic and consular authorities.
Given the delivery times, it is recommended to anticipate these procedures, which may take several weeks.

A vehicle carries the supplies and your personal belongings, which we will find every evening. You will only have in your bag what you need for the day (lunch, light effects, camera, water bottle, i.e. 3 or 4 kg).
The ascent of the Imbabura, Pinchincha and Illiniza volcanoes does not involve any technical difficulty, but these peaks peak at an altitude of 4600 m and 5100 m, close to or higher than that of Mont-Blanc (4800 m). The terrain is sometimes steep but normally not snowy.
For Cotopaxi, it is necessary to master the basics of mountaineering: cramponing at all points and forwards, rope walking. Progressive acclimatization to altitude should allow you to make these ascents without problems. Depending on the level of the group and the conditions, the guide reserves the right to cancel one or other of these climbs.
Altitude: It is absolutely essential to check that you have no contraindications to a prolonged stay at high altitude (between 4000 and 6000 m). Do not leave without consulting a doctor, especially if your health condition requires regular treatment.
In case of doubt, make an appointment for a specialized consultation with ARPE (Association for Research in Environmental Physiology).

NB: you are going to participate in an “adventure” program, a travel formula that is totally different from conventional tourist circuits: the discomfort, the unexpected, the health conditions, which we may encounter, suppose everyone has a good spirit of tolerance and a taste for adventure.
Through your active and positive participation, you will contribute to the cohesion and good understanding of the group, which is a guarantee of the success of the trip.

Health and formalities
Vaccinations: no vaccination is required by the Ecuadorian authorities (except that against Covid). Vaccination against yellow fever (valid for 10 years) is strongly recommended for the Amazon (useless for Cotopaxi).
We also recommend that you be up to date with standard vaccinations: diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.
Malaria: it is essential to seek advice from your doctor or the Pasteur Institute who will prescribe antimalarial treatment (for the Amazon only).
Provide personal protection against mosquito bites, which will prevent you from other viral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes (dengue, chikungunya and zika).
Water: you have to be careful with water. Avoid drinking tap water in the city and water in nature. Drink water that is boiled or treated with Micropur or Hydroclonazone, or better, drinks in a closed bottle.
Sun: you are under the equator. Do not forget to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Keep a T-shirt, or a long sleeve sweatshirt.
Altitude: check that you have no contraindications to a stay at high altitude. Do not leave without consulting a doctor, especially if your health condition requires regular treatment.
Dentist: a short visit before departure can make it possible to detect an inopportune cavity, which the altitude is sure to stimulate...
Individual pharmacy: the UCPA pharmacy is designed to cover first aid and the typical inconveniences of this type of trip. However, we ask you to bring: your personal toiletries, your usual medications if you are undergoing treatment, moisturizing sunscreen, lip stick, small roll of elastoplast + Tricostéril (for blisters) or “double skin”, neutral eye drops, neutral eye drops, minor antidiarrheal, healing ointment, antimalarial for the Amazon program. Attention: there is no “common” antibiotic in the pharmacy, each participant must bring, if they wish, their own treatment according to their tolerance.
Hand hygiene: hand washing before each meal, or antibacterial hydro-alcoholic gel.
Important
No additional travel insurance is included in your registration.
We remind you that it is essential that you have at least a “medical care abroad” guarantee and a “repatriation” guarantee including “search and rescue costs”.

Weather
The Ecuadorian climate is particularly varied and irregular and almost any time of the year is suitable.
In the “Sierra”, statistically, there is a “dry” season from June to September, but this does not mean that it will not rain at all and there is often quite strong wind.

Conversely, the “wet” season alternates between scattered showers and long periods of good weather.
As everywhere in the mountains, many microclimates due to the situation, exposure and altitude bring multiple nuances to the general climate, and it is better to have both a rain cape and sunglasses in your bag. Altitude is of course a determining factor.
In Quito (2800 m), the average temperatures are pleasant (mini = 8°C, max = 22°C).
Above 5000 m, the thermometer can drop below -10° at night.
Plan your equipment accordingly (warm clothing).
In the Amazon, the climate is humid all year round, but the heat is quite bearable (max = 30°C).
