Road from Rajamaa to Kilpisjärvi (about 2.5 hours drive), meeting point between the borders of three countries, Norway, Sweden and Finland, and where we embarked.
Departure for our descent, and first thrills at the height of the Kilpislupa rapid. We have to carry canoes and our equipment to avoid the biggest rapids. Passage of the first rapids, with the help of our guides who ensure our safety (for some rapids, we will carry the boats). Dinner and overnight in a cottage in the Sami Lapps village of Keinuvuopio on the Swedish border side.
Day 3 - From Keinuvuopio to Litto (23 km)
Loading the canoes and a great day of sailing with class 1 to 3 rapids, alternating with breaks on quieter waters and quieter navigation. At the end of the day, we will find a suitable place to set up our camp (sleeping in “tipi” tents). Participation in the various tasks (preparing dinner, tidying up, etc.) is very much appreciated! Night in a tent.
Day 4 - From Litto to Pättikkä (23 km)
This morning, we crossed a few class 1 to 3 rapids before reaching areas where the river is much quieter. For lunch, stop at the village of Naimakka which is one of the most remote villages in Sweden. In the afternoon, our paddling takes us over fairly calm waters before reaching one of the most important rapids called Pättikkä. Setting up our camp above the rapids. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 5 - From Pättikkä to Kelottijärvi (21 km)
A day full of sensations with the passage of the most technical and impressive rapids of the Pättikkä River (classified 4 to 5). Sailing continued with 6 or 7 other rapids during the day (class 1 to 3). In the afternoon, we reach Lake Kelottijärvi, on the banks of which we set up our tipi camp. Dinner on site, prepared by us.
J6 - From Kelottijärvi to Karesuando (28 km)
Another great day to fully enjoy the wild beauty of the taiga! Several small rapids (locally called “Niva”) are on the program, class 1 to 3, but the river is getting quieter. The river is now called Muonio, whereas it was called Könkämä further up. Arrival at the end of the day at the village of Sami de Karesuando, with a long tradition of reindeer herding. We are leaving our tents for tonight for a night's sleep in a cabin and a well-deserved dinner.
Day 7 - From Karesuando to Kuttainen (22 km)
Last day of canoeing in the heart of the Arctic. The navigation is mainly on calm waters, even if we pass a few small rapids. Our foray into the heart of Lapland continues, we are surrounded by pine and spruce forests. A few small hamlets are scattered along the river, kingdom of salmon fishermen in the traditional fashion called “harling”. We arrive at the village of Kuttainen at the end of the day, and pack up all our things. Return by vehicle to Rajamaa, dinner and overnight at the Rajamaa hostel.

SPOT
Rajamaa village
Immerse yourself in the heart of Lapland
The village of Rajamaa is a tiny village (it has only 7 inhabitants) located in the heart of Lapland, on a small island in the Muonio River, on the border between Sweden and Finland. It is the ideal place to recharge your batteries in the middle of nature: the region is the 0 benchmark for measuring European pollution, in other words, that the air is really pure there. In summer, you can go mountain biking or hiking; in winter, the course of the river forms an ideal hiking trail on foot, or with a sled dog. It is also a recognized site for cross-country skiing, with no less than 200km of trails.
