SPOT

The archaeological site of Tikal

At the heart of the Mayan empire

Tikal is the best known archaeological site in Guatemala. It is located in the tropical forests of the northern tip of the country, 19 kilometers south of the current Mayan city of Uaxactun. There are the famous ruins of the capital of an ancient Mayan kingdom, about 3,000 structures on an area of more than 16 square kilometers. To facilitate its protection, the Tikal site is integrated into the National Park of the same name. In particular, it has remarkable trees, including the gigantic Kapok, the sacred tree of the Mayans. The fauna of the park is very diverse: you can see the common agouti, the white-nosed coati, the gray fox, the Geoffroy's stele, the howler monkey, the forest eagle, the falun, the falcon, the ocellated turkey and various species of toucans and parrots.

Information valid for French nationals on 15/02/2024 (and to be checked before your departure):

COVID INFORMATION:
The authorities announced the lifting of restrictions on entry into the territory of Guatemala since August 12, 2022. Travelers are therefore no longer required to present proof of vaccination or the negative result of a Covid-19 screening test upon arrival.
Wearing a protective mask in all circumstances is no longer mandatory.
Health conditions change regularly and evolve differently in each country. We therefore invite you to consult the latest measures and updated instructions on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning Guatemala: https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/guatemala/

=> COVID INFORMATION IF YOU STOP OVER IN THE UNITED STATES:
Since May 12, 2023, the Covid-19 vaccination requirement has been removed for travelers going to the United States, whether by air, land or sea.
------------------------

Vaccinations: no vaccination is required by the Guatemalan authorities.
However, we recommend that you get vaccinated against typhoid, hepatitis A and B. Check that your reminders are up to date (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis).

Malaria: there is no risk of malaria above 1500 m, but for the Tikal/jungle part of Peten, it is essential to take advice from your doctor or from the Pasteur Institute who will advise you on whether or not you need to follow antimalarial treatment. Provide personal protection against mosquito bites, which will prevent you from other viral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes (dengue, chikungunya and zika).

Water: you have to be careful with water. Avoid drinking tap water in the city and water in nature. Drink boiled water, or water treated with Micropur or Hydroclonazone, or better, drinks in a closed bottle. A few basic hygiene rules will save you a lot of inconveniences, in particular the systematic washing of your hands with soap before eating.

Sun: you are in the Tropics, and your stay takes place partly at altitude. Do not forget to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Keep a T-shirt, or a long sleeve sweatshirt.

Altitude: check that you have no contraindications to a stay at altitude. Do not leave without consulting a doctor, especially if your health condition requires regular treatment.

Dentist: a short visit before departure can make it possible to detect an inopportune cavity, which the altitude is sure to stimulate...
