SPOT
Irazu volcano
A breathtaking lunar landscape
The Irazu volcano is one of the five active volcanoes in Costa Rica. It culminates at an altitude of 3432 meters. Its crater hosts a lake with waters made acidic by the dissolution of volcanic gases. The slopes were formed by a succession of layers of lava during the eruptions. The volcano is part of the National Park of the same name, about thirty kilometers from Cartago. From its summit, on a clear day, the panoramic view of the valley and the two oceans is exceptional. The surroundings of the crater, on the other hand, recall a lunar landscape, completely bare, covered by a layer of gray ash.

The trek is accessible to anyone in good physical condition able to walk 6 to 7 hours a day on trails without technical difficulty, with a bag containing personal belongings for 3 days (7-8 kg).
However, it should be noted that the difficulty can increase significantly depending on the weather conditions: heavy rain, muddy ground. In this case, it is a “3 star” level. If the ground is very dry, it is more like a “2 stars”.
During this stay, you will not exceed the altitude of 3400 m in Irazu, and 2000 m during the trek.
The Rio Savegre rafting trip is accessible to all, and offers class 2 and 3 rapids, which you will pass safely, with supervision and adapted equipment.
The program may be modified according to the volume of the river, which is greater during the “humid” period than during the “dry” period.
Sea kayaking
It is not necessary to have previous experience but your ability to handle the paddle acquired during a weekend or an internship will be a plus. It is of course essential to know how to swim at least 25 m and to be able to put your head under water (ministerial decree of 4 May 1995). A certificate may be requested upon arrival.
During this trip, we will travel approximately 500 km on the roads of Costa Rica, at an average speed of 50 km/h.
